A record-breaking year for the Smiley Charity Film Awards

Recognising the power of film to inspire change, the eighth annual Smiley Charity Film Awards, presented by Smiley and powered by Smiley Movement CIC, took place at the Indigo O2 on 20 March.

IMG_2049A host of celebrity guests from the world of film, fashion, TV, music and entertainment were in attendance, including Una Healy, Jeff Brazier, Patsy Kensit, Patrick Grant, Julien Macdonald, Anton Ferdinand and Sophie Hermann. The night was hosted by television and radio presenter Lisa Snowdon (pictured right), and recognised outstanding cause-based films across multiple categories from UK and international charities. Winners were chosen by both an expert judging panel and public vote. Jeff Brazier hosted the yellow carpet, chatting with stars and representatives from the charity sector about their work and achievements.

The Smiley Charity Film Awards attracted a record-breaking 520 entries this year, and over 53 million additional views were generated by the campaign.

Film of the Year went to Refuge, for a powerful and moving film starring Billie Piper that shone a light on domestic abuse and the vital work of the charity. The People’s Choice award was won by The Hedgehog Preservation Society, whose film advocating for one of Britain’s most beloved but endangered species, narrated by Chris Packham, captured viewers’ hearts.

Speaking about the event, Nicolas Loufrani, ceo of Smiley Movement, commented: “Film has a unique ability to touch hearts and inspire action, and tonight’s winners have proven just how powerful storytelling can be in raising awareness and driving change. Congratulations to all our finalists and winners for their incredible work.”
