Disney enjoying box office boost with Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2

Disney is enjoying a bumper spell at the box office, with this weekend’s release of Deadpool & Wolverine setting records, while Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is now the biggest animated film of all time.

Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine launched with an estimated $438.3 million worldwide, dividing into $205.0 million for North America and $233.3 million for 52 international markets, reported Screen Daily.

It marks the highest global opening ever for an R-rated film, surpassing Deadpool which launched with $264 million in 2016. It is also the highest global opening since Avatar: The Way Of Water, which opened just ahead, with $439 million in like-for-like markets.

At the UK and Ireland box office, Deadpool & Wolverine enjoyed a £12.6 million opening – the biggest of the year, and the biggest for a Marvel Cinematic Universe title in more than two years.

However, the top international launch market for the film was China, with an estimated $24.0 million, followed by the UK and Ireland (a four-day $22.1m), Mexico ($18.7m) and Australia ($13.0m), with Germany, Brazil and India tied in fifth ($10.0m).

The $484m launch for Deadpool & Wolverine pushes the MCU to a $30bn worldwide total, the highest grossing film franchise of all time.

Meanwhile, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 passed the $1.5 billion barrier at the weekend, now standing on $1.506 billion. It is the biggest animated film of all time (passing Frozen 2) and has also overtaken the biggest movie of 2023 (Barbie). It is now the 12th biggest film of all time globally.
