The Super Mario Bros. Movie has powered past Frozen at the box office to secure the best debut of all time for an animated title.
The Nintendo and Universal/Illumination movie took $377 million around the world in its first five days of release – overtaking the previous record of $358 million held by Frozen 2.
In the US, the movie – which stars Chris Pratt as the moustachioed Italian plumber and Jack Black as fire-breathing villain, Bowser – earned $204.6 million over five days to secure the best opening of 2023 to date, plus the biggest five-day (Wednesday to Sunday) debut ahead of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($200.1 million) in 2009, Screen Daily reported.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie also produced the highest Illumination three-day debut ahead of Minions’ $115.7 million in 2015, as well as the highest three-day for a video game adaptation ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on $72.1 million in 2022.
Internationally, it grossed $172.8 million, with the UK and Ireland accounting for $19.6 million.
The movie has also been enjoying success in the consumer products space, with collaborations including a dedicated Monopoly, while handmade cosmetics company Lush has launched an exclusive product collection.
