New style guide highlights Abbey Road’s ‘spirit of creativity’

The Point.1888 has unveiled a new style guide for the iconic Abbey Road Studios, as part of the music brand’s debut licensing programme.

Developed in partnership with Abbey Road and London design agency Skew, the style guide represents three unique creative treatments tailored to a range of customers and product categories, celebrating the creativity, pioneering innovation and iconic history that are synonymous with Abbey Road.

The new style guide draws on the narrative threads that underpin the brand – from the pioneering innovation that has defined the equipment and recording processes used by artists and engineers for the last 90 years, to the unique recording spaces that have shaped the Studios’ sound, and the many musical and technical innovators who have made Abbey Road their creative home and shaped the Studios’ creative philosophy.

These themes have been explored and developed across three creative approaches: Make It Happen, Live. Dream. Create., and Wild Minds & Rebel Hearts.

Make It Happen showcases the visual personality of the recording studio. Featuring the patterns, shapes and textures that have shaped the aesthetic of Abbey Road’s identity, from the red of the recording sign, to the bold black and white of the legendary Abbey Road crossing, this is a collection inspired by the creators, for the creators.

Categories for Make It Happen include high-end fashion collaborations, streeweat, gifting and homewares.

Meanwhile, Live. Dream. Create is inspired by the ‘pioneers, mavericks, dreamers and innovators’ who have created brilliant moments in music history. Combining graffiti, penmanship, quotes, scribbles and iconic visuals, the creative celebrates the artists, producers and composers and the legions of music fans who have left their mark at Abbey Road.

Categories include creativity tools, stationery, arts and crafts and fashion.

Wild Minds & Rebel Hearts features predominantly child-friendly designs.

The focus for the concept includes STEM kits, children’s publishing, softlines and arts and crafts.

“For over 90 years, Abbey Road Studios has been a home for the most celebrated musical and technical creators in the history of modern music,” commented Jeremy Huffelmann, general manager at Abbey Road Studios. “With the launch of this style guide and the broader licensing programme, we are incredibly excited to share our creative universe beyond our walls, and to further expand our platform for enabling, inspiring and educating creators around the world.”

Oliver Dyer, founder of Skew, continued: “We’re entering a time when fandoms are driving creativity from the bottom up instead of the top down. People around the world are familiar with the iconic imagery of Abbey Road Studios and the stories of the artists who have been inspired to create lifetime-best work there. But what we really wanted to uncover in our work for the Abbey Road team is their spirit of creativity. They are the pioneers of making the state-of-the-art accessible to wild minds and rebel hearts.”

Katie Wilkinson, head of publishing and operations at The Point.1888, concluded: “The new style guide for Abbey Road Studios is an incredible insight into the brand as a whole. Skew have done an amazing job of capturing the look and feel of the building, finding inspiration in the technology, artistry and history of the brand.

“We are very excited to be working with Abbey Road as they now look for new licensing partners and collaborations that will define what the iconic studios mean to consumers.”
