V&A continues its strong growth in China

V&A has continued to experience strong growth in China throughout 2022, with the launch of nine new collaborations in fashion, childrenswear and home goods.

Alongside this, the V&A’s Tmall flagship store now features over 200 new and unique products.

Licensees have access to rich content and inspiration from the archive including work by the famous Art Nouveau illustrator Alphonse Mucha and the sketches by Victorian artist, Sir John Tenniel. The latter’s illustrations for Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll have proven popular as his renowned drawings are currently in the spotlight as the V&A’s exhibition Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser tours East Asia.

Alice’s creative curiosity is reflected in the V&A’s collaboration with Mido House (pictured above). Presented in detailed embroidery on high-count cotton fabric are Alice, as well as the Cheshire cat, the Mad Hatter, playing cards, teacups and other elements she meets along her adventures.

Meanwhile, AMIRO and the V&A joined forces to create a fusion of art and technology with the Alice in Wonderland themed ‘Find the Light’ gift box. The O2 series of high-definition mirrors and six-stage radio frequency facial devices from AMIRO takes customers on a journey to where creativity and innovation work closely together to enrich their lives with its design. The successful launch saw the first range sell out, with a second range to follow.

Inspired by a selection of Art Nouveau work from the V&A’s collection, statement pieces from Hopeshow focus on decoration from the 1897 portfolio ‘L’Animal dans la Décoration’ by the French artists Maurice Pillard Verneuil and Eugène Samuel Grasset, who encouraged designers to reevaluate the status of animal and plant forms in the aesthetics of ornamentation. Each collaboration between Hopeshow and the V&A provides an opportunity to spark everyone’s curiosity and encourage discovery. The range was sold online, in stores and promoted through a dedicated V&A pop-up store in Beijing during September.

Finally, Czech painter, poster artist, graphic designer and craftsman, Alphonse Mucha, continues to inspire consumers and brands alike. The Mucha series of fashion jewellery are inspired by details of the intricate headdress adorning a woman’s hair in a poster by Alphonse Mucha, and are created with advanced jewellery technology to ensure a refined look that epitomises the highly decorative style of Art Nouveau designs. The jewellery set brings to life Mucha’s instantly recognisable style and is the perfect fusion of art and fashion.
