Shopper numbers up 11.7% for Boxing Day, but Sunday trading is more muted.
The high street benefitted from Boxing Day falling on a Saturday in 2015, with figures showing 11.7% more people hit the shops compared to 2014.
UK retail analyst Springboard said shopping centres and out of town retail parks also benefitted, with footfall growing 7.8% and 3.2% year on year.
However, 24 hours later, shopping was more muted, with footfall dropping 40% across the UK, with shopping centres the worst hit. This has mainly been put down to trading starting later, due to December 27 falling on a Sunday this year.
When Springboard compared Sunday December 27 2015 to Sunday December 28 2014, however, footfall rose 8.9% this year.
Meanwhile, moving online, and Christmas Day once again proved popular for shoppers.
Digital analytics company SimilarWeb said that the biggest winner was video games retailer Game – which last week was hit by a profit warning – which registered a 140% increase in desktop traffic on December 25.
Elsewhere, ASOS, H&M and Sports Direct also all doubled traffic year on year, while PC World saw 85% leap in visitors and Lidl reported a three-fold increase in users on its app.
